FIELD GUIDE: AN INTRODUCTION TO SURFCASTING

Crowe's Pasture Conservation Land - Where inspiration struck

Good afternoon, friends. I hope everyone is having a fantastic week. Over the last few months I've been going through a bit of an adjustment period with The Atlantic Surf. It's very tough to balance getting out in the great outdoors, taking photographs, writing about fishing experiences, and developing products for others to love. In all the commotion, one of my biggest challenges is in deciding what to spend my time writing about. Luckily, I have an amazing following on Instagram (this isn't self promotion, more-so a respect and thankfulness for all those that follow me) and enough individuals willing to share what they are looking to read/discover through our Logbook. One of the requests that has surfaced time and time again is for a basic explanation of fishing the beach, written for the interested individual looking to make their first great leap into surfcasting. The following series is written for you, and I hope you find the material interesting, informative, and inspiring. And so it begins, an opportunity to learn more about one of humanities greatest pastimes, the search for one of nature's most inspiring creatures, the fish.

In my life, fishing has played a major role in my love for the outdoors and has developed into a hobby very personal to me. Over the past few years, surfcasting has driven me to spend time learning more about something outside the weekly grind of corporate-life. Over the years, that passion, the interest to explore something outside the norm, has led me down a path of learning and discovery I previously thought imaginable.

So here I stand, with a humble knowledge of wind, tide, weather, bait, lures, species, moon phases, geography, and other pieces of knowledge that filter through an inspired and excited mind. I can't wait to share with you all I know and have discovered through countless trips to sand-strewn beaches and rocky shorelines.

Do I know it all? Of course not. Are there those out there who know a lot more than I do? Of course. All I can share are my experiences, my understanding of fishing the great Atlantic based on trial and error, and a little knowledge culminated over years of attempt.. cast after cast.. trial after error.. and passion.

In the coming articles, what I hope to provide is a basic understanding of what it means to fish the beach. This is my understanding and experiences of the sport. What I know, is that like you, I was once a beginner, tepidly walking down the beach to throw my first cast, with no prior experience, knowledge, and filled with the excitement and anticipation of what was to come. Let's begin here.. I hope you enjoy my future articles and look forward to sharing them with you.
